Who wears what? This is the question asked by the Palais Galliera through the Anatomy of a collection exhibition from 14 May to 23 October 2016.
From courtly attire to overalls, worn by anonymous figures or celebrities, the exhibition brings together some one hundred items of clothing and accessories retracing fashion from the 18th century to the present day.
Among the selection on show, we find the famous shoe hat – designed by Elsa Schiaparelli in collaboration with Salvador Dali – worn by his wife Gala during the winter of 1937, along with the well-known “Harlequin” evening coat from Schiaparelli’s Autumn/Winter 1949 Haute Couture collection. These legendary pieces rub shoulders with Marie Antoinette’s corset, Napoléon Bonaparte’s waistcoat, worker’s trousers, a Zouave military uniform, Audrey Hepburn’s suit, a convict’s uniform and Tilda Swinton’s evening pyjamas, to name just a few.
Clothing’s story is told through its wearer…
All the wealth of the Galliera holdings awaits visitors to the exhibition.
