The V&A’s summer 2015 fashion exhibition, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain explores the transformative power of extreme footwear. More than 200 pairs of historic and contemporary shoes from around the world are on display, many for the first time.
The selection includes these boots from Schiaparelli’s 1938 Circus collection, with monkey fur cascading over the ankle boot. They recall a painting by rené Magritte, Love Disarmed (1935). The exhibition explores the agonizing aspect of wearing shoes as well as the euphoria and obsession they can inspire.
For the Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 2015-16 show, Bertrand Guyon, Style director at Schiaparelli, revealed a sublime staging, a real nod to the Parisian theatre of the thirties. The models with a diaphanous complexion seemed straight out of an imaginary performance.
Make-up artist Dick Page revealed their skin’s natural glow with a coral-toned blush and radiant blue eyeshadow. With their lips coloured Shocking pink, they wore low chignons sprinkled with gold powder styled by Odile Gilbert. Delicate tiaras decorated with ivy leaves, Commedia dell’arte masks, hearts, olive branches or Phoenixes adorned the faces of these contemporary goddesses.
